Turaida Castle is located in the small town of Sigulda, 50 km from Riga. The castle belongs to the Turaida Museum-Reserve, which includes 37 other objects of medieval architecture.
Turaida Castle began its history in 1214, when, by order of the bishop, construction began on the site of the burnt wooden castle. The name “Turaida” from the language of the Fino-Ugric tribe, the Livs, meant “Divine Garden".
For five centuries, the castle served as a defensive structure, until, in 1776, the main tower burned down. In the 19th century, the territory and buildings of the castle were converted into an estate. The ruins of the castle complex officially received the status of cultural property in 1924. Only in 1954, restoration began in the castle.
The 26-meter stone tower was the first to be restored. Today, the tower houses a museum and an observation deck on 5 floors. This tower is considered to be the very first building of the entire castle complex. This lonely dungeon tower allowed you to observe everything that was happening in the vicinity, even from the other side of the winding Gauja River. Later, the tower could serve as the last refuge in the event of a castle siege. Since 1974, large-scale excavations began on the territory of the complex, during which a huge number of archaeological finds were found.
During the research, the artifacts found were described on more than 1,000 pages, 500 schematics and layouts of the castle were compiled, and more than 7,000 photographs were taken.
A technology widely used in ancient Roman baths, hypocausts, was used to insulate the castle's premises. The furnaces used a special system of voids under the floor and in the walls of the building to spread heat throughout the castle, which warmed the castle perfectly.
Today, the castle presents exhibitions about the history of the castle, telling about the prison located in the basement of the castle, about the guards who lived in the castle, and, of course, about how the castle looked during its heyday.
In 2002, due to unstable weather and large temperature fluctuations, the bank of the Gauja River collapsed, on which the castle stands. There was a risk of losing only the restored castle. The landslide, which reached an area of 4,000 square meters, miraculously did not affect the castle. As a result of the investigation of the problem, it turned out that the castle does not have a drainage system. Water and snow just accumulate on the slopes.
The complex is currently hosting a large number of cultural and musical events in the region and the country. Concerts and festivals are held on the territory of the Turaida Museum-Reserve. The Turaida Museum Reserve is among the top ten museums in Europe.
